copal vs benzoin

I know I could look it up, but I'm feeling lazy. ;-) Anyone here wish to increase my educational base? What is the difference in usage or intent? And, the reason I became curious is, I was browsing at a shop this weekend, and they had several different kinds of each - I couldn't tell the difference. I chose some Siam benzoin over the other choices, and some very nice chunks of dragon's blood. I've burned copal before, and really can't tell much difference between it and frankencense, either. I'm hoping the benzoin has some qualities I can play with. They were really large rock-like chunks - It didn't want to break or crumble as easily as the dragons blood. Interesting striations and colors of pale yellowish to pink with streaks of dark.
thanks for any info!

To start, I notice a huge difference between frankincense and copal (d'oro) but thats just me, I guess. I find the pine like notes are more pronounced in frankincense, while copal has more citrusy ness to it.

I believe the benzoin you acquired is the quality resin. There are two types, but one is more preferred for turning into perfumery materials, while the other makes better incense. In a Hoodoo context, Benzoin is for general good luck and money drawing. In some works about spirit work, burning it is like ringing a bell. Its big HELLO to EVERYTHING. In that case, pair with something else that will keep unwanted spiritual entities away. In another book, I find it is listed a cleansing incense. Benzoin has a very balsamic odor (that is vanilla like) and is very pleasant.

Copal is from the America's where it used primarily by Aztecs and other tribes as an offering to thier Gods, well the carrier of offerings to thier Gods. It also was used in cleansing rituals to make things suitable for offering, and clear and bless spaces. In my own personal experience, I find it to be a gentle action in spiritually preparing a space, whereas Dragon's blood feels more "violent" and Frankincense is gentle, but more like staring into the Hot sun.

    Hope this helps.

I've become fascinated with the different textures and 'essence' of these different resins. I posted a pic of my favorite new ones. The amber I've had for over a year, it is so fragrant that I have to keep it in a sealed box. When I lift the lid, the scent is noticable immediately and through the whole room, if I keep it open an hour or so. I set up my altar for Mabon yesterday, and burned the new stuff I got. I was amazed at the difference in scent and texture. Even though it all burned into a nasty black tarry mess on the charcoal, the dragons blood is crumbly, brittle and sharp. I could break it with my fingers. The amber is almost gooey, very waxy and I didn't like the burnt smell of it as much as raw. It's scent is like perfume and lingers on my fingers through several washings if I handle it bare handed. The benzoin was the hardest, I may have to get a mortar and pestle to break some of the big chunks, it's like a rock, and much too big to put a whole chunk on the charcoal. I was very surprised at the mellow, exotic sweet scent of the benzoin! Not at all 'smoky' smelling although it smoked like crazy as it burned. I was afraid the smoke alarm would go off, even though all windows and doors were open. It went all through my house, and still lingers in the clothes I was wearing yesterday!
Anyway - I just wanted to ramble, I really enjoyed my experiment, and I feel that it really cleared out my house energy for the new season approaching. I hope it cleansed out the germs from my cold, too, although I'm getting out the disinfectant for surfaces to ensure that result. :-) hmmmm.. maybe if I melt some amber into the lysol bottle.....
      Blessed Mabon all...

The dark copal (negro) is in use for shamainic rituals, its scent is dark and mysterious; the wite copal (bianco) has a light and bright scent that summons the sun and earth gods and godesses, its scent is hoey lemon frankincense and Damar in one........the sungolden copal (oro) is in use for protection and for calming and honouring the ancestors.

the Thai or siam benzoin is a very stron sweet scent that tickels the throat and was used since the old times to honour the ghosts of air and æther, the kings of old times used it as perfume and medicine, the Sumatra benzoin, is more like vanilla and almonds, try it with Palo Santo, and some opoponax, you think u sit in a chokolate almod marcipane coconut room......this is what makes the fun in incense experiments, similar names but totaly different scents, for benzoin there is one rule, the more rose ist colour is the better the quality.

Copal is totaly great if u use 2 parts negro, 1part bianco and 1/2 part oro! delicious.........

or have you ever tryed to catch the scents of rain? one for the feeling coming the ozon taste on the tongue, the second for the first drops on buildings and streets, then rocks and dried fields, woods and and and.....this is experimenting taht gives you a glimpse of the posibilities you have by getting a whide range.....

P.S. there is actualy a 4 copal, rare but existing, its copal bark, soaked by resin and very precious!

        Blessings to you from danmark

        Regards
