Hiya', James! So....how might one go about acquiring a copy of this book (it sounds freakin' awesome!)? Apparently there's only a very limited supply, unfortunately--it's definately one I want to save up for!
Also, having not read this book (at your own admittence) how do you *know* that this author is a regular Prof. Snape (Poor Dumbledor... Why, Snape?! WHY?!)--has he discussed his knowledge through other sources, or what have yoiu? Please inform me, dear friend...
All my best,

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Mon, November 5, 2007 - 3:13 PMThere were only about 150 copies of this book, and they are probably not available even if you wanted to spend beaucoup bucks, like more than five hundred bucks.
Long long ago... I belonged to a chaos magic group with Daniel and he wrote for a short-lived journal out of Santa Cruz called Widdershins. Rarely have I met anyone who had such a massive knowledge of plants, their habitats, chemical structures and so on. And his genius is that he personally gathered or grew hundreds of them and meticulously detailed his experiments in doing various types of extractions and tinctures. He would bathe in them, ingest them, smoke them, sleep with them... and more. That is why I have such a deep respect for his knowledge, and the fact that he also revived many old practices of brewing up potions. I have a copy of Viridarium Umbriis (also now super rare). He is currently the head of the Cultus Sabbati and is reclusive and I have no idea how to contact him. He only self publishes through Xoanon, and they do not respond to any emails and you have to basically write them and ask if you might please be placed on a list to buy future books. I will dig through some of his old articles to see what I might find if there is something specific you are searching for. -

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Mon, November 5, 2007 - 3:35 PMFriends,
The work of Mr. Schulke is exceptional. Viridarium Umrbis is an amazing body of plant knowledge, and Ars Philtron is, from what I understand, a true gem. There are copies around, but, as has been said, they are generally very expensive.
Xoanon has just announced the formation of Three Hands Press, which has some works by Chumbley, Schulke, Pendell and others in the works. Should be interesting. Definitely something to watch for.
If you find a copy of Schulke's work, and have an interest in plants, you won't be disappointed.
Love,
Veg

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Mon, November 5, 2007 - 10:29 PMHe has many philtre or potion recipes, some for healing, love. Some to pour as altar offerrings. Some to animate statues or fetishes.
Due to copyright issues I do not want to put his work online without permission, though I suppose giving a small excerpt by way of a review would be OK.
Since this is an incense forum, I will look for an incense recipe and post it. -

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 10:59 AMWOW!!! So....what book of his do you own that you're speaking of, again? Hey, could you send me a private e-0mail giving a few more details about his work?
*sigh* Too bad his book publications are so small--I wonder why he opted to use the publisher he did, rather than something larger to get the information to as many interested folks as possible?
Take Care,

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Tue, November 6, 2007 - 11:36 AMThe Cultus Sabbati is focussed on books as magical objects so they do not produce anything that is not an "art book" small run production. They do not seem interested in reaching a large audience and do not take students or do much of anything public as far as I can tell. You can read about them online and reach your own conclusions.

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 10:24 PMI just saw a copy of the Ars Philton being sold through Caduceus Books in England for £2000. That's over 4k USD. Needless to say and sadly unfortunate, I do not own a copy. Fortunately I do have a friend who has a copy that I can reference when need be.
A dear friend of mine just purchased 'Viridarium Umbris' a few days ago for £275 w/ shipping it came out to about $600. Another friend of mine found one in the US for a bit less 6 months ago. Aprox. $550 -$600 seems to be the going rate right now.
I think I paid £39 for my copy a few years ago when the book was first released. All of Xoanan Press books become 'rare' shortly after they are released and the price rises in turn.

$4,000 for AP, eh? Ugh. That makes me regret not getting the copy Ben, from Caduceus, offered me for $600 not too long ago. The offer came at a bad time, and I couldn't swing it. Now I feel like kicking myself.... Did I say "ugh" already?

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Sat, November 24, 2007 - 8:36 AMThere is currently a copy of Ars Philtron going on ebay with a buy it now option of $4000 The seller also has a copy of One-The Grimoire of the Golden Toad. I have tried in vain to secure a copy of the Viridarium Umbris, it seems the only place one may find them is on Ebay and all copies I am bidding on seem to go closer to the $1000 mark. I personally think that someone should make a pdf of this available or Xoanon should republish the work,it is one thing to state that these books are works of art and make limited print runs, but it is absolutely ridiculous how much they are currently being sold for, and the only way to remedy that is to reprint the titles. It is the information within these books which I wish to have and that which is truly valuable and can aid the student, pictures of these books, no matter how wonderful looking they may be, are of no value.... Anybody willing to scan a copy of the Viridarium Umbris, or Ars Philtron and make them available as a pdf would be doing thousands of people a great justice... -

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Sat, December 1, 2007 - 11:12 PMThe new book The Pleasure Garden of Shadows is out of this world.
I kick myself all the time for passing up Ars Philtron a few years ago. -
-
Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Sun, December 2, 2007 - 3:16 PMan acquaintance was kind enough to let me spend some time with his copy of Pleasure Garden. interesting stuff i must say. . .kinda puts run of the mill, mass marketed herbal books to shame. -
-
Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Sun, December 2, 2007 - 5:08 PMYes. It does make the dozens of rehashed new agey wicca junk books on herbs look extra crappy. His work is obviously based on extensive hands on herbal work and obscure folklore. It is not something you are likely to find anywhere else.
Though I get the point that it is ridiculous how rare and expensive his works have become, I also believe that scanning his books is stealing and I feel that intellectual property theft is very very low. It would be nice if an affordable reprint was available, but I also find the idea that all esoteric knowledge should be free and available with no effort to be pretty unrealistic if not actually infantile and symptomatic of an entitled, spoiled bratty wordview. Before now, people would give up fortunes and travel the world, suffering for years to track down occult teachings but now they want a free pirated download.
OK. That was my rant. -

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 1:58 PMyou have it exactly james.
"Mistake not this book for the words on it's page"
is the final insription in azoetica
If all else fails EAT this book. Something is bound to happen. or some thing like this was said by AOS
I have thousands of rare books on PDF but my Shulke and Chumbleys are special. -
-
Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 10:22 PMI believe that is an allusion to the book which the Azoetia actually conceals which can not be gleaned from a mere reading of its "words". I agree though, many books should be available to the public for the advancement of those who have planted the seed. The work of the Cultus on the other hand is not for all to see or read, and even some that I have met that are in possession of these tomes definitely should not be, at least in my opinion. These writings are sacred in the highest sense of the word and the books themselves are magickal tools, which no copy or pdf could ever replace. -

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 7:30 AMFriends,
For those that haven't heard, Ars Philtron is being republished by Xoanon this summer.
The Ars Philtron, Edition Codex Vasculum is being published in a run of 720 standard copies, 72 deluxe editions and 11 special editions for private distribution. The book has been expanded "with revised text, additional formulae and illustrations not present in the 2001 release." The new edition has 272 pages, with 27 illustrations.
Xoanon is taking pre-orders for this book. I've ordered mine, and thought I'd share the information for those interested, since the original text is hard to find and quite expensive at this point.
The new edition is $75.00 plus shipping and such. Can't beat it.
Enjoy!

but I wish it was more affordable -

Re: "Ars Philtron" and Daniel Schulke
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 3:46 PMI hear what you're saying. I know the books aren't accessible to everyone.
$75.00 is as affordable as it'll ever get. The last edition was selling for about $1400, last time I checked.
The books are all published as limited editions, and usually sell out in a flash. They're masterfully done books, both in terms of text and production.
If you're interested, and can treat yourself, and even get it as a gift from someone else, you're likely to enjoy the book very much.
