Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knows of any posatively primo lit. detailing the chemical solubility of as many various gums and resins as possible?

I have made alcohol tinctures of lots of resins and the solubility is dependent on multiple factors, like how finely you have ground them, the temp of the liquid, and so on. During the summer, I have sometimes put them in sealed glass bottles to heat in a sunny window. I have used cheap vodka (you can filter it several times through a Brita-type filter and it takes out cheap vodka impurities). Many are also soluble in lipids (such as olive oil, jojoba...). The softer gums, like labdanum are more soluble. Lots are soluble in DPG, dipropylene glycol, if you are not adverse to using chemical solvents.
However..... most of the time what you get, though it smells good, can be very tacky, so that if you use it on your skin it will leave something like an adhesive residue. Sometimes it is only a minor thing but if you are using it be aware that it can be really gummy. Good Luck.
There are some technical perfumery books that cover some of this, but they are not generally available, even at university libraries with a big chemistry dept. they seem to be hard to find.
